The Squat. This is one of the most important exercises for your body. You might think that it just involves your quads (the muscles at the front of your thighs), however this would be incorrect. This beautiful movement focuses on developing the quads, hamstrings, glutes and core. Most importantly is the GLUTES (your butt). Who doesn’t want a beautifully shaped and sculpted bottom? If you do no other exercise, do the squat. The deeper you go into the squat, the more you recruit your glute muscles and hence the more your butt will be shaped. Ever heard the term “Ass to grass”, well it refers to squatting. Take a moment to picture an ass to grass squat and feel the burrrrrrn. I will preface this by saying that you cannot spot train. By this, I mean you cannot just train one specific body part and expect results in that area only. Fitness is total body experience and you have to work the whole body to see results. However, as I mentioned, squats work several very large muscle groups so it is a great start towards developing a tight and toned body. Keep in mind that if you have some extra fatty tissue, you may not be able to see all of the results of your hard work as the muscles may be hiding under a layer of fat. In this case, adding some cardio to your routine would be a perfect choice. The stair master is a killer and I have found it to be the best bang for your buck in terms of amount of calories burned in a short amount of time. This cardio torture device will help to burn unwanted fat and help to build up those leg muscles, and most importantly, that ass! Another great cardio exercise to target the butt is the treadmill and elliptical. Really?! You don’t get off that easily! Yes these can be great for butt development however they are particularly effective when used on an incline. Crank those babies up to full incline and go at it. You don’t have to be running on the treadmill for endless hours on incline 1,000,000, and I actually never run on the treadmill. What I do is crank the incline up all the way and walk at a brisk pace. You should not be exerting so little energy that you are able to read a book while you are doing this. You should be sweating! As for the elliptical, many people like this machine. It is not my favorite and I would much rather do the incline treadmill, however some elliptical machines do allow for you to raise the incline and if you are going to use the elliptical make sure it is one that has this capability. You can decide for yourself if you like the treadmill incline or the elliptical incline better and let me know.
I work out my legs twice a week and incorporate squatting into both of my leg says. That’s a lot of squats… Let me tell you that my booty thanks me for this. You know you’ve done good when you get stares from the men but also the women!
